Haku Privacy Policy

Haku is built for writing you do not need to keep. The app is designed to avoid saving, uploading, reading, or analyzing your writing.

Last updated: May 29, 2026

Writing Content

What you write in Haku is held while you are writing, then cleared when you press and hold to clear the page. Haku does not intentionally persist your writing content.

Haku does not intentionally:

  • save your writing content,
  • transmit your writing content,
  • log your writing content,
  • analyze your writing content,
  • use your writing content for analytics,
  • use your writing content for advertising, or
  • upload your writing content to Haku servers.

iOS and system text-entry frameworks may briefly hold text in memory while you type. Haku does not claim system-level guarantees it cannot enforce. Haku clears its own writing buffer when you press and hold to clear the page and does not add a saved copy of its own.

History Marks

If History is on, Haku keeps a small local record each time you clear the page. A history mark can include metadata such as the local date and selected mark symbol. It does not include the words you wrote.

History marks are stored locally on your device so Haku can show your history. You can turn History off in Settings to clear current marks and stop future date marks.

iCloud History Sync

If you have Haku Leaf and enable iCloud history sync, Haku may sync history mark metadata across your Apple devices through your iCloud account. Your writing content does not sync.

Haku does not operate its own account system for iCloud sync. iCloud is provided by Apple and is governed by Apple's terms and privacy policies.

Settings Stored Locally

Haku may store app preferences locally on your device, including:

  • whether onboarding has been completed,
  • privacy mode settings,
  • Face ID or passcode reveal preferences,
  • third-party keyboard preference,
  • haptic preference,
  • appearance choices, and
  • history preference.

These settings are used to make the app behave the way you choose.

Keyboard Privacy

Third-party keyboards are blocked by default in Haku. Third-party keyboards may have privacy behavior outside Haku's control. If you choose to allow third-party keyboards, the keyboard you choose remains governed by its own privacy behavior.

Privacy Modes

Haku includes privacy modes designed to reduce accidental exposure of your writing.

  • App-switcher cover helps hide Haku content when you switch apps.
  • Face-down or covered hide can dim or hide the page.
  • Face ID or passcode reveal can require authentication before showing the page again.

These features are privacy aids, not absolute guarantees. They cannot control every operating-system behavior, device setting, or physical environment.

Accounts, Analytics, and Third Parties

Haku does not require a Haku account for the core writing experience in the iPhone app. The current iPhone release is designed without Haku app analytics, ads, third-party advertising SDKs, or Haku-operated writing-content servers.

The Haku marketing website may use PostHog to understand visits and App Store button clicks. Website analytics can include the page URL, referrer, browser and device details, approximate location inferred from network information, and the time of the visit. Haku does not send writing content to PostHog.

Haku uses website analytics to understand whether the public site is working. It does not use analytics to read, score, summarize, or infer meaning from your writing.

If app networking, app analytics, crash reporting, server sync, a third-party SDK, or a Haku account feature is added later, this policy will be updated.

Purchases and Apple Platform Services

Haku Leaf purchases and restore-purchase flows are handled through Apple's App Store systems. Apple may process purchase information, Apple ID information, Family Sharing status, refunds, and related App Store data according to Apple's terms and privacy policies.

Haku receives only the purchase or entitlement information needed to unlock Haku Leaf features.

Children

Haku is intended for a general audience old enough to use expressive writing safely and understand the app's privacy model. Haku does not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes

If this privacy policy changes, Haku will update this page with a new effective date. For material changes, Haku may provide an appropriate in-app or App Store notice.
